Project Information
WIVA P&G HyWest
Establishment of a green hydrogen economy
In Tyrol, as part of the WIVA P&G flagship region of the Climate and Energy Fund, the regional use of green green hydrogen is implemented under real-life conditions. A bakery and a butcher’s shop are supplied with process heat from green hydrogen. Lorries are switching to hydrogen fuel and high performance HRS are tested as well as busses and snow groomers. A multidisciplinary consortium is researching the cross-sector generation, storage and production, storage and application of green hydrogen in the region.

Development of a
Holistic Logistics Project
As part of the current ‘WIVA P&G HyWest’ project, which is co-financed by the Climate and Energy Fund with 9.2 Mio. euros, complementary hydrogen projects are being developed at food manufacturer and local supplier MPREIS, Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe AG (ZVB) and TIWAG-Tiroler Wasserkraft AG. The aim is to use pioneering technologies and regional resources to make green hydrogen available in the right quantity and quality (purity) at the right time and at the right cost.

Implementation of a
Green Regional Hydrogen Economy
HyWest is researching the economic potential of green hydrogen in order to utilise it in a targeted manner as part of a regional hydrogen economy. The main objective is to develop an autonomous green regional hydrogen economy, for which the processes of cross-sector production, storage and application of green hydrogen are being implemented and researched. Green hydrogen is an important building block for the transformation of the energy system as it is CO2-neutral when produced using clean electricity from the sun, wind and water.

Building the
Bridge to a Clean Energy Future
There is no alternative to hydrogen when it comes to restructuring the energy system because it can be used as a transitional energy carrier in various forms. ‘WIVA P&G HyWest’ generates Austrian expertise for the development of a green regional hydrogen economy and thus for building the bridge to a CO2-free energy future.
WIVA P&G HyWest will bring the following projects together:
MPREIS Ges.m.b.H. – Green Hydrogen for Mpreis, Tyrol and Europe
Initiated as part of the European “Demo4Grid” project and ongoing since 2016, the aim is to implement a 3 MW pressurised alkaline electrolyser (PAE) at the MPREIS production site in Völs (Tyrol, Austria) to provide grid balancing services and large quantities of green hydrogen for industrial use in food production as well as for heavy-duty mobility applications with logictic, which is part of the WIVA P&G HyWest project. The green hydrogen plant has been in operation since March 2022.

ZILLERTALER Verkehrsbetriebe AG – Hydrogen Valley
The Zillertaler Verkehrsbetriebe AG (ZVB AG), which operates the narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn railway and numerous bus services, has been working on the Zillertalbahn energy-autonomous hydrogen project since 2016. As part of the WIVA P&G HyWest project, Zillertal plays an important role in the development of a green regional hydrogen economy. The WIVA P&G HyWest hydrogen mobility can also be supplied by the hydrogen logistics currently being developed with other redundancy projects.
TIWAG-Tiroler Wasserkraft – P2X Hydrogen Center
“Power2X Kufstein” ongoing since 2019, in which the construction of an innovative sector coupling (P2X) plant with a hydrogen center in the southwest of Kufstein near the TIWAG (Tiroler Wasserkraft AG) hydro power plant in Langkampfen in Tyrol is planned. In the event of a risk, a Power to X plant in Jenbach will take over the planned role of the plant in Langkampfen as part of the WIVA P&G HyWest project.
